Every week I make a conscious decision to go to a trail or a park and sit on a bench and admire nature. I leave my phone, and my wallet. I only bring my keys to my car (I don’t want to be locked out) One day, when I was doing this, I was staring up at the trees and admiring the birds and the wind. My mind was empty, I was only looking at how tall the trees were in comparison to me. I watched as people jogged by with their headphones plugged in, or their phones up to…

Since I first signed up for Facebook in 2006, I’ve been all over social media, well actually maybe even before that. I had a Myspace, and I also had a Blackplanet account (well, I used my brothers but it’s all good). I’ve grown up with social media but now it’s to the point where it’s almost like a limb of mine. It’s how I get news, it’s how I stay in touch with some friends, it’s where I come for laughs now, It’s where I come to hear opinions and all kinds of silly things. So needless to say, I…

I woke up this morning and I heard that another mass shooting had taken place in the United States of America. This time it was the Las Vegas mass shooting. Which might impact people more because of how much fun Las Vegas is. As I was reading all of the “pray for the victims of the Las Vegas shooting.” Tweets, status’s, and pictures on Instagram I just sat there wondering, how can this happen again? Then as I was mulling over the Las Vegas shooting, a strange feeling came over me. I realized that I felt… Nothing. No remorse, no…

I’ve been watching Kain Carter AKA hotdamnirock’s videos for years. This YouTube personality has been through a lot. But through it all he’s always made us laugh. All he did was talk about his life. That’s all that Kain Carter did. From that, the hotdamnirock YouTube personality’s channel was born. Things that happened to him were hilarious. I couldn’t relate to all the stories, but I could relate to Kain Carter’s feeling of fear, confusion, and rational thinking. I quickly subscribed to the hotdamnirock YouTube page and didn’t look back. Every week I had something new to look forward to.…

Why is it that Americans, American-christians in particular, are so afraid of the letter X in Christmas? For years I’ve heard so many people getting angry saying “They’re trying to take the Christ out of Christmas, literally.” And for years I thought the exact same thing. I would get mad because Christ is the reason for the season. The season is not about spoiling your kids beyond measure, and to replace Christ with the letter X felt like a corporate ploy to try and make it about shopping, instead of appreciating and loving each other. But as time kept going…

From the moment I saw the words “Black Jeopardy” On SNL my first thoughts were “Man…. Come on.” I was ready to be offended, and I was ready to fuss. I was ready to give a side eye to the black actors who didn’t stand up for such an offensive sketch, and be upset that they actually decided to play stereotypical characters. I was ready to be angry! Then I watched Black Jeopardy… One thing that we as a people (Not just black) need to realize is that the war is not on a specific race. It’s on the poor…

A common sentiment among American sports fans is that sports is a place for escape.  That sentiment at bare minimum is a very simplistic example of say it with me….Privilege.  Yes, privilege.  While a break from everyday stress is something most people can appreciate, the idea that sports can somehow provide an escape is a luxury that African-Americans and other people of color simply do not have.  Comments like “I watch sports to escape life and politics”  or “I just want to be dumb for a while” especially in the midst of the ongoing demonstrations by athletes against police brutality…

To the fourth grade teacher who did nothing but be black, beautiful, and a woman, I decided to write you a letter through a media outlet because I know you’ve been receiving a lot of negative attention through other websites. I also hear that because of the attention you’ve been getting that you’ve also been reprimanded by your school. I hope that’s not true, but if it is than I’m sorry. I’d like to say that all of the attention you’ve been receiving is because of what you’re wearing, but I’m afraid it’s so much deeper than that. You see…

This morning I read two articles on my way to work. To me they really set a picture of how far we have progressed as a nation, but still how we have so much further to go. I’ll start with the one that was most heart wrenching. A young woman physically assaulted and violated at Stanford University. You can read her emotional, moving, response to the situation in this article. I read all 7,244 words, you should too. https://www.buzzfeed.com/katiejmbaker/heres-the-powerful-letter-the-stanford-victim-read-to-her-ra?utm_term=.ykLJXw9kJ#.vlZ3gXNp3 A jury found her attacker guilty of three counts of felony sexual assault and was sentenced to…six months in jail. No,…

You know, when you work with a lot of different races of people you see interesting variances of life. While working with a variety of Latin men and women, most of them don’t speak great English. So in the U.S., where there are nothing but English speakers, it gets difficult to have conversation all the time. One day I saw a guy trying to talk to one of our Latin workers and he couldn’t really understand what he was saying. So the guy starts to make a gesture toward the worker and the worker completely understood. As I watched this…
