Every time I’m ready to give up on Drake he keeps reeling me back in. I was not the biggest fan of Views. I actually didn’t like that album whatsoever. There were only two or three songs that I had on repeat, and the rest was just more fake singing on the album. I came to the conclusion that Drake has gotten to big and now he really has no motivation to keep putting his best work out there.
If anyone can remember the power remix when Jay Z said “You got the power to do anything you want to. Until you ask yourself ‘is this what it all comes to?’ Lookin’ at life through sunglasses and a sunroof. Until you have the power to get out from up under you.”
I believe that’s where Drake is right now. He’s gotten so big that no one can truly compete with him. He’s going to have to find a way to push himself even harder. Being hungry for the throne can’t push him anymore, he’s at the top. There’s no denying that, but there’s also no denying that his music is beginning to be repetitive.
For the first time in a while I heard Drake sound hungry when he dropped 4pm in Calabasas. Now Drake has dropped some more new tracks and the promise of a new album. GREAT! Over the last few months Drake has had to deal with a little friction (Peep the Joe Budden diss. Which I believe Drake wants no parts of).
Drake is now dealing with people either turning their back on him, or he’s realizing that just because he’s the bestselling, doesn’t mean he’s the most respected. Maybe Drake will take that realization and get back to his roots, when he used to be in the dictionary looking for words instead of just rapping about his redundant girl problems.
I listened to his new tracks and once again I got a little bit of hope. Drake does that every single time with his albums though, so we’ll see. Listen to Drake’s new songs and tell me what you think. He definitely has my attention, now he needs to bring back his core fans. The ones who told the world about how great he is, the ones he then abandoned just to do big numbers on the chart. I’m hoping that we get the Drake we all know and love back.
